A mix of modern and traditional from Kat & Cat Quilts

Hello, friends! Louise here to share a few quilts made with your donated orphan blocks. First up is a great mix of purples and greens, one of my favorite color combos. The blocks are set with a uniform pale gray sashing for a simple, masculine feel.

Here's another use of a gray background, but in asymmetric columns. Every block also contains gray, as does the scrappy binding. The occasional bright pops of color add spark and give it a modern vibe.

This quilt has also has a modern column layout, but the blocks and color palette feel very traditional ...

Priscilla's Pretties from Kat & Cat Quilts

Hello, friends! Louise here to share a few quilts I finished from Priscilla's blocks and tops.

This one came to me as big log cabin blocks, and I laid them out in Fields and Furrows. The autumnal fabrics are gorgeous!

This is a classic in scrappy lights and darks. I think this block is called Split Nines? Priscilla is great at using contrast in her quilts.

Here's a deep dive into the variety in Priscilla's stash. So many different fabrics, all playing nicely together.

Someone donated several yards of this cute piggy fabric, so I put it ...

Little panel quilts from Kat & Cat Quilts

Happy Friday! I hope you're enjoying the days getting longer as spring gets closer. Here are a few small quilts full of cheerful fabrics. This first one is made with eight donated orphan 16-patch blocks. I added these whimsical kitties that were given to me by a member of my online guild, Sunshine.

Kathleen actually sent me two of the kitty panels, so I set the other one among orange, blue and black 9-patches. The little cat faces are so cute!

I had lots of this orange kangaroo fabric, so I used it on the back.

This panel features ...

More orphan blocks and their friends from Kat & Cat Quilts

Hello, friends! Louise here to share a few more quilts made with your orphan blocks. Let's get started with a square quilt for the NICU. Lots of bright colors in this one! The house block is my favorite. The corner blocks were donated as triangles made of the pretty strips and I added the blue. They make a nice frame for the whole piece.

Blue and yellow is such a classic combination, don't you think? Many of the pinwheels arrived as half square triangles, perhaps made with a charm pack. The whale and dolphin panels make a nice ...

Orphan block quilts for comfort from Kat & Cat Quilts

Hello, friends! Louise here with more of the great orphan blocks that you've donated. First we have Priscilla's fun crumb blocks.

I sashed them in purple and added a townhouse border print. One of the great things about super scrappy blocks like this is that any color works for sashing. Why not choose purple?

This next quilt was made with these lovely, low contrast sampler blocks sent in by an anonymous donor.

The colors are so soft and pretty! I added darker sashing and borders to make the blocks stand out. I was tickled to find just the ...

A parade of finishes from Kat & Cat Quilts

Hello, friends! I'm back to share a few more of your orphan pieces that were donated to Covered in Love. First up is this bold, modern quilt in all solid fabrics. The pattern is called "Lofty" and all the blocks were sent in by one of you. I can't recall if they were already sewn into rows, or just a big pile of blocks?

I stitched up the top, found this cool backing in coordinating colors, and quilted it up with parallel lines. I think it's quite handsome, don't you?

Next is another modern piece. This ...

Beautiful donated tops from Kat & Cat Quilts

Hello, friends! Louise here to share some really lovely tops that were donated to Covered in Love recently. I quilted and bound them and now they are ready to comfort families. First up is this bright, modern quilt pieced by Christine. The black centers of each block are a fun confetti design.

Next is this cute disappearing nine patch by Donna. Have you ever tried this block design? I've made several myself and it's so versatile.

For the back, I used this blue floral that was also donated. Zingy!

Next is this all-batik bargello pieced by Priscilla. I ...

Circling the center from Kat & Cat Quilts

Hello, friends! Louise here with more quilts made with your orphan blocks. Today's post will feature pieces that have medallion-style centers. Check out the two gorgeous blocks in the middle of this first one! I believe they were both donated by Jan. I surrounded them with two borders made of various smaller blocks in bright colors, many donated by Priscilla. I tried to keep each color grouped together for a bit of cohesion.

On the back, I used this pretty red and white floral. This was also donated, and I'm always grateful to get big pieces for backings ...

Finishing touches featuring Priscilla and Stephanie from Kat & Cat Quilts

Hello, friends! Louise here to share some lovely quilts that were donated as nearly finished tops and only required a little bit of extra sewing on my part. First up is this gorgeous sampler made by Stephanie.

The top was languishing in her UFO pile. So many fun blocks, several new to me! Check out this trapunto butterfly with metallic gold blanket stitching. You can see the pretty, shimmery pale blue background she used, too. I think it is Fairy Frost?

I love the colors in this quilt, and was thrilled to find this backing fabric donated by Christine. Doesn ...

Beautiful blocks from Kat & Cat Quilts

It's time for another display of the lovely blocks you have donated to Covered in Love! Louise here, and I'm so happy to share the beauty that shows up in my mailbox. Let's start with this collection in cool purples, greens and blues.

Aren't these pinwheel rail fence blocks neat? I like to imagine someone made a whole quilt with these blocks, a big swirl of purple and twinkling yellow covering their bed. Of course a wise quilter will make a few extra blocks, just in case. Her careful planning is my raw material!

Next is ...

Orphan blocks playing together from Kat & Cat Quilts

Hello, friends! Louise here to share more of your donated orphan blocks. It's so satisfying to find a group of friendly blocks to play nicely together into a finished quilt. Let's start with this one in red, black, and cream. It started with two sets of bear paw blocks. The ones across the bottom came to me as separate blocks, and the ones at the top are 3D and were already sewn together. That thin red line is a skinny flange. These was some extra bear fabric so I added that elsewhere for continuity.

Sometimes I know who ...

I get by with a little help... from Kat & Cat Quilts

...from my friends. Hello! Louise here with some quilts that were started by friends of Covered in Love, and finished by me. These only needed a little help, making my job easy.

First up is this great modern turquoise quilt. Diane N. started this top and made all the cool striped squares with a single fabric cut into triangles. Look at how perfectly the stripes match up. Wow! The original design started out on point and looked like it would finish king size or even bigger. HUGE! It came to me still in pieces, about 3 or 4 diagonal rows ...

Pieces from Priscilla from Kat & Cat Quilts

Hello, friends! Louise here to share some beautiful quilts pieced by Priscilla and finished by me. Priscilla is a generous donor, sending in many coordinated blocks and tops. Let's dive in!

This first quilt was donated as a small top, featuring rail fence blocks interspersed with nine patches and friendship stars. All it needed was a small border, so I added a navy blue animal print. Red flannel backing and simple stippling keep it soft and snuggly.

Next we have a vibrant star block quilt, also completely scrappy. Priscilla has a great eye for value so these stars have ...

So much variety in your orphan tops and blocks! from Kat & Cat Quilts

Welcome to another post featuring YOUR orphan blocks and tops! Louise here, filling in the words to go with Kat's mighty fine photos. With everything Kat has on her plate, I'm so grateful that she takes the time to make these quilts shine in their school pictures.

The first quilt features a garden theme. The four sections look like they were sewn together by the
same person and were perhaps meant to be small wall hangings. Such pretty little panels!

I added a neutral background to combine them into a single lap sized piece and put more garden ...

Your donations, ready to go! from Kat & Cat Quilts

Hello, friends! Louise here to share another batch of quilts made from your donated orphan blocks, tops, and fabric. The variety of what passes through my hands on the way to comfort families never ceases to delight me! Let's jump right in with these neutral hexagons, made by Julie S. Isn't this soft and soothing? Julie's top was just a smidge small when it arrived. She had already bordered it with scrappy 3" neutral squares and rectangles, so I pulled a few more from my stash and just added another round to bring it up to size ...

New Year New Quilts from Kat & Cat Quilts

Hello and Happy New Year! The first thing that needs to go on this post is one last quilt from Louise. This one has components from Tracy L, among others.  It had a dye-bleed issue due to one of the backing fabrics, and due to space constraints on her boat we decided that I would tackle it here. Fortunately, with a 24h soak in Oxi and Dawn it came clean!

I'm so glad Louise made the past two posts and told us about her process for making her beautiful quilts from orphan scraps.  I always love what she does ...

More of your orphan blocks and UFOs from Kat & Cat Quilts

Hello, again! Louise here with another batch of quilts made from the parts and pieces that YOU have sent in. Let's start with the one that was the closest to completion when it arrived. I think this style is called a "Baltimore Album." The central blocks and several borders were finished and I only needed to add the final 2 or 3 borders to bring it up to size. I'm pleased that I had fabric that coordinated really nicely with the greens and deep reds of the center. While these are classic Christmas colors, the design isn't ...

Presenting: Your Orphan Blocks from Kat & Cat Quilts

Hello! Louise here, to share with you a couple of quilts I finished using YOUR orphan blocks. See one of your blocks in this post? Let us know in the comments! This first quilt started with the two sections of log cabin blocks in the center column.

Both came to me already sewn together, but not large enough for an entire quilt.

I love the soft blues and pinks of this one! It lingered in my studio until I gathered enough friends in similar colors to fill out a top. I grouped similar size and style blocks into three columns ...

Bright Happy Quilts from Louise from Kat & Cat Quilts

Tammy is still hard at work on the May/June block drive quilts! Visit her blog to see the latest!

Louise sent me this batch of orphan block quilts a while back and they've been waiting their turn for a photo shoot.  The blocks that started this quilt came from Cathy and Louise added some.

Some of the blocks appear to be from the book Farmhouse Vintage. I love the embroidered details on the mixer and the bee.

Louise blogged about these quilts on her site here.  So you can read more details there.

These wonky stars and the ...

Orphans, UFOs, and WIPs from Kat & Cat Quilts

Welcome back to another rundown of quilts Louise has put together from the unfinished projects and odds and ends that are donated to Covered in Love! This modern setting of orphan blocks with negative space is one of my favorites, Louise blogged about it here

Louise also made this Jacob's Ladder from some charm packs. She wrote a funny blog about it here.

These present blocks came from Christine and made a quick finish, blogged here

I tried to capture to metallic gold in the fabrics, but you'll just have to take my word for it! There were ...
